Makola Shopping Mall – Accra

When one thinks of Makola in Accra, one thinks of a market rather than a mall. However, Makola Shopping Mall predates 923797its fashionable cousins at East Legon and at Tetteh Quarshie by almost 20 years.Unlike A&C and Accra shopping malls which trace their origins to western style high street shopping; Makola has emerged out of an authentically African market trading tradition. Shop keepers and stall holders live together in a happy confusion and a few mobile traders still weave their way through the throngs of shoppers hawking their wares. What Makola does share with its upmarket relations is convenience. Shoppers are able to access a wide range of consumer goods in one central location.

Makola Shopping Mall boasts two car parks, one behind the shopping centre and another tight but shady one beneath the complex. The cost of parking underground is GHS1.75. This might seem a bit pricey but there is no time limit and you have the reward of returning to a cool car after a few hours of bargain hunting. Although the building has been designed to be breezy, this is not an air-conditioned mall and trekking through the maze of corridors over 3 floors can be hot work.

So who should go to Makola Shopping Mall? Well, this is hands-down a women’s domain. Everything the lady wants for her personal care and upkeep is available in massive quantity at this consumer’s paradise. The shopping mall caters for every type of woman for every occasion and the whole place is awash with colour. Plastic hair decorations, traditional Ghanaian glass beads, copper jewellery, batiks and waxes all jostle side by side in brash splendour. Wigs, bags, shoes and toiletries galore, crowd together in an almost obscene abundance. The business woman will find as much, if not more, to meet her needs at Makola as in the newer, shinier shopping malls. For a start, there is no other place in Accra where the shopper has a choice from as large a range of business suits. For about GHS100 you can walk away with a brand new European or American tailored suit that is fit for the boardroom. Heals B, Sandio’s and Lenec Boutique all specialize in formal wear. Aside from suits they have a good selection of designer clothing for evening occasions and weddings etc.

Anyone needing cosmetics should look no further than Makola Shopping Mall. This is a haven for the beauty conscious lady. There are stalls stacked high with makeup, perfume and hair care products which range from cheap goods to exclusive designer names. You get the sense that the sellers are veterans in the trade and can be seen expertly advising on products and applying makeovers to prospective buyers. Makola Shopping Mall is also the home of Sleek Cosmetics and their group of glitzy air-conditioned shops, most reminiscent of the modern shopping mall experience, dominates a section of the lower level.
