Hats are back this season, but so are jackets, and this winter they are better than ever. Look for accessories like scarves, belts and shoulder pads to add to your otherwise plain blazer or jacket. Yes the pads are back, but they are nothing like the 80’s. This year look for shoulder pads that accentuate the shoulders without making you look like a football player.

Not all jackets need to be accessorized. Look for single breasted fitted peplum styles that slim down the waistline. Wide collars and small shoulder pads will shrink your waist by at least two inches. Bold solids along with plaids and herringbone are flying off the shelves this season. Cropped swing coats in green and navy plaid along with wool baby doll blazers look great with a pair of skinny jeans or a pencil skirt. Remember if you are going for a fuller look on top keep it lean and mean on the bottom.

Double breasted jackets continue to be hot this season. They never really go out of style. Look for military styling with brass buttons and pockets. Go for cropped, or opt for knee length. The classic trench coat has been updated and looks great as a cropped and belted blazer. Navy, black, khaki and military green in cotton and wool will make you feel like you are starring in a James Bond movie.

If you like leather you will not be disappointed. The 80’s are back and bigger than ever. Cropped jackets with padded shoulders and fringe trim will give you the vintage look with a 21st century feel. Black is always stylish, but this year go for a splash of color. Accessorize your leather with a colorful scarf and a pair of red gloves. Wear your cropped leather jacket with a pair of flares or a denim mini skirt with thigh high boots.

Capes are huge this season and there are many styles to choose from. Look for hand knitted pullovers in bright colors, or go for something with sleeves. Capes are extremely versatile and look great over a sweater dress or with a leather skirt.

It is all about being original this season and if you want to stand out from the crowd go for jackets that are a bit whimsical. Look for brightly colored buttons against a dark background or try a neon plaid. Do not be afraid to be a bit different this winter.
